San Marcos, CA - Tuesday night the Seawolves women's basketball team made their third straight CCAA tournament appearance under head coach
Rich Shayewitz. 4 straight losses to end the season however, dropped the Seawolves to the 8th seed in the tournament pairing them with #1 seeded Cal State San Marcos. San Marcos just came off an upset at home last Saturday night against UC San Diego to take over first place in the conference and move into the top seed in the tournament. Sonoma did have the cougars number this year sweeping the 2-game series in conference play winning on the road and in the Wolves Den so they would come in with plenty of confidence looking for an upset in the quarter finals.
A dead even first quarter had the Seawolves just down 1, 14-13. While just shooting 3-11 from the field to start the contest, SSU held the Cougars to just 4 made field goals in the first quarter to keep it close out of the gate. The second quarter would prove to be the deciding point of the game for the Seawolves as they had just one made field goal and 2 free throws to total 4 points in the quarter. The game would flip on a dime as the Cougars scored a game high 19 in the quarter and took a commanding 33-17 lead at the half.
Despite the deficit, the Seawolves never stopped fighting as they responded with a game high 21 points in the third to pull them to within 10 going into the 4th. 3 Seawolves would finish the game in double figures with senior
Sophie Northern leading the pack with 13 points and 5 boards.
The Seawolves would go 5-10 from the floor in the 4th but that was just simply not enough as San Marcos made 8 field goals to put the game away late. Sonoma makes their third straight CCAA tournament appearance but fall short in the first round to the top seed Cougars 51-65. Coach Rich and his group had another terrific year with all-conference talent across their entire team and were considered to be one of the top teams in the conference for the majority of the season. We wish everyone else good luck in the rest of the tournament and bid our seniors fair well,
Sophie Northern,
