MSOC: Seawolves Battle #25 Cal Poly Pomona to a 1-1 Draw

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State men's soccer team opened conference play on Friday afternoon with a 1-1 draw with #25 ranked Cal Poly Pomona.  The Seawolves scored first and nearly walked away with the win in overtime but ultimately walked away with the tie.  They moved to 4-3-1 on the season and stand at 0-0-1 in CCAA play.

The game started slow with both teams trying to find their rhythm early.  Each team recorded just one shot in the opening 20 minutes with the game mostly taking place in the midfield.  In the 23rd minute the Seawolves broke the seal with a header by Luis Diaz-MendozaJohnnie Dodge got the play started with a pass out wide to Sebastian Bernal-Santos.  Bernal-Santos then sent a cross into the box where Diaz-Mendoza ran onto the pass and headed it inside the left post.

Cal Poly Pomona evened the score almost exactly ten minutes later when Paul Henschke drew a foul inside the box to earn a penalty kick.  Henschke stepped up to take the PK and converted right down the middle for the goal.

"Luis's goal put us in a good spot early.  It was a beautiful goal but unfortunately they were able to equalize with a penalty kick later in the half." – Head Coach Marcus Ziemer

The second half was played to a draw with both goalkeepers shining at moments.  Reinier ter Reit made a pair of outstanding saves for the Seawolves, one of which came off a free kick from just outside the box.  Ter Reit dove to his left for a full extension save to keep the score 1-1.  Sonoma's best chance came in the 69th minute when Evan Sadler's breakaway was turned away on a kick save from Jordan Aldama.

After the game moved into overtime still tied 1-1, the Seawolves looked to have ended the game in the 94th minute on a score by Bryan Rosales. Rosales finished off a rebound on a shot by Brian Field but was called offsides and the goal taken off the board.  SSU managed two more shots in the overtime but could not tally the winner.

The next chance came in the 103rd minute when the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box.  Sean Rohane took the PK but missed it just outside the left post.  The final seven minutes passed without a real scoring opportunity and the game ended with each team earning a point in the conference standings.

"That was a great college soccer game! Both teams really showed how good they are and anytime you can play Cal Poly Pomona and be disappointed with a tie you know you played really well." - Ziemer

Ter Reit made seven saves in net for the Seawolves, a new career high.  Sonoma recorded 12 shots on the game while the Broncos finished with 15.

"Tomorrow we will recover and get ready for another tough match on Sunday.  Opening the conference schedule with the 2018 National runner-up in Pomona and then facing the 2019 runner-up two days later is a great test for us." - Ziemer

SSU returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a match against Cal State LA at 2:00 pm.
