ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Saturday November 13th, the Sonoma State women's volleyball team finished their 2021 CCAA regular season in a matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Day. Prior to the game, Sonoma State athletics honored three seniors a part of the volleyball program for their dedication and accomplishments throughout their Seawolf career.
McKenna Brewer,
Amy Trephan, and
Emily Eaton were all recognized for Sonoma State in front of their family and friends and the warm SSU home crowd. On behalf of Sonoma State athletics we thank McKenna, Amy, and Emily for their committment to the SSU volleyball program and you will always be a part of the Seawolf family. The Seawolves would look to cap their regular season off with a win over the Toros and take two of their last three matches.
After dropping the first two points of the set, head coach
Bear Grassl and his group went on an 8-0 scoring run to take a commadning 8-2 lead. The Seawolves were very effective against the third ranked team in the country, Cal State San Bernardino, with long scoring runs to force 5-sets earlier in the week and that would prove meaningful again early in todays match. Kills from senior
Emily Eaton and
Kiana Richardson would contribute to the early lead. After a late run from the Toros to bring the set to within four points, SSU would go on to record four of the next six points to close out the first set, 25-19. A kill from Eaton and a service ace from
Angel Gamboa would finish off the Toros in the first set.
Dominguez Hills would respond, however, in the second set as both teams would exchange points until a 10-10 tie. Following the knotted score, SSU would score 5 of the next 6 points with the help from
Jessie Hobbs would recorded one of her three kills on the night and
Jenn Trephan who recorded one of her five aces on the night which would lead all players. The Seawolves would go on run after run in response to any Toros point and
Angel Gamboa would cap off the second set with back-to-back aces to give SSU a 2-0 lead with a sweep in their sights.
The third set would tell a little different of a story as both teams would find themselves tied at 10 a piece once again, but the Toros would go on a 5-1 scoring run to grab their largest lead of the match. After a service error from SSU and then Dominguez Hills kill, the Toros saw a 19-14 lead with hopes of forcing a fourth set. Head coach
Bear Grassl would get his team back into rhythm just in time as the Seawolves went on a 7-2 scoring run to come all the way back and tie the set up at 21 a piece! The Wolves' Den was the loudest it was all night during that run and Sonoma State had completely changed the momentum as they were closing in on the match sweep. After Dominguez Hills grabbed the next point to regain the lead, 22-21, senior
Emily Eaton would continue her stellar night with a kill of her own and
Jenn Trephan would record yet another ace to complete the two point swing and retake the lead. The Toros wouldn't go away though as they silenced the crowd with a kill of their own to tie the set at 23. As the tension built, Sonoma State would capitalize off of the Toros serve and outside hitter
Kiana Richardson would record her game high 14th kill of the night to give the Seawolves a one point lead. After a difficult serve from SSU, Dominguez Hills would commit an attacking error on the last play of the game to end the match and give coach Grassl and his group the Senior Day sweep to conclude the CCAA regular season.
