POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team suffered a tough defeat in the CCAA Tournament title game on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves scored the game's first goal but surrendered the last two in a wild second half. Sonoma State now awaits their NCAA Tournament fate when the bracket is revealed tomorrow.
The first half was controlled by the Pioneers as they fired shots on goal often but from long distance. Cal State East Bay registered a 12-3 shot advantage for the period but with most of the shots coming from outside the box. Goalkeeper
Phoebe Barnes made three saves to keep the game scoreless, including a diving stop on a shot from 25 yards out. CSUEB nearly got on the board in the 19
th minute but Riley Spitzer's shot hit off the post and clear of net.
Sonoma State would strike first in the second half, drawing a penalty when
Malia Falk was taken down at the top of the box. CCAA Defender of the Year
Julia Pritchard stepped up and buried the PK into the right side for her fourth goal of the season.
The game turned in the 61
st minute with a crazy two minutes of game action. First, Payton Heaney ran down a pass for the Pioneers, dribbled it into the box and slotted the shot past Barnes and inside the far post. Just over a minute later,
Renee Ketner nearly put the Seawolves back on top but her shot hit the crossbar and fell in front of the net. Pritchard nearly got to the rebound in time but Jordan Smith was able to corral the ball. On the ensuing counter Cal State East Bay was able to notch another goal, this time off the foot of Kelsey Pena to make it 2-1.
Sonoma State pressed for the final 27 minutes but could not come away with the equalizer. Their best chance came in the 86
th minute but Pritchard's header went wide left.
The Seawolves now look to make their eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons. They entered the game as the No. 4 seed in the West Region and now await their seeding and opponent tomorrow afternoon. The selection show will air at 3:00 pm on
