WBB: Second Half Slump Sinks Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team could not hold onto their early third quarter lead as Academy of Art prevailed 68-53.  The Seawolves, fresh off their victory over Holy Names led 41-39 with six minutes remaining in the third only to see the Urban Knights respond with a 12-1. 
 
After falling behind 5-0 in the opening minutes Sonoma State responded with a 12-2 run to lead by as many as five.  Taylor Johnson and Chasity Spady bookended the run with 3-pointers.  ARTU caught fire from 3-point range in the first connecting on five triples but Camille Johnson put Sonoma up 14-13 with a layup in the final minute.  The Urban Knights finished the quarter with another three and let 16-14 after the first. 
 
Aaryn Pickett quickly tied the score to open the second and followed with a triple of her own to make it 19-19.  Zane Sheckherd later put the Seawolves up by two but ARTU closed the half strong to take a 32-29 lead into the break. 
 
Cielo Gonzalez took over the start of the third quarter, scoring six of the first twelve Sonoma State points to put the Seawolves up 41-39. From there the rest of the quarter was all ARTU as their defensive pressure led to a 16-3 run. 
 
Trailing 55-44 entering the fourth the Seawolves scored five of the first seven points to pull within eight.  They would eventually chip it down to seven but could not get any closer. 
 
Both teams shot 37% from the field while both topping 50% in the third quarter.  The difference in the game was the 21 turnovers by Sonoma State, leading to 23 points for the Urban Knights. 
 
Gonzalez led SSU with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists while Shauna Jackson tacked on eight points. 
 
Sonoma State opens CCAA play next week when they host Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State on Thursday and Saturday.
