SAN FRANCISCO – The Sonoma State women's soccer team clinched their second straight CCAA title with a 3-1 victory over San Francisco State on Thursday. The Seawolves closed the season with two big victories to improve their conference record to 8-3 and sit at 13-4 overall.
Sonoma State turned in a fantastic all-around match in their regular season finale, controlling the ball for the majority of the game. The Seawolves peppered the Gators goalkeeper with shots in the first half and finally broke thru in the 36
th minute.
Malia Falk drew a penalty kick when her shot from just outside the box was whistled for a handball on San Francisco State.
Julia Pritchard stepped up and buried the PK into the top corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Gators would get even before the half closed however, scoring in the final minute on one of their two first half shots. Alexa Avelar knocked home a cross from AJ Tanner that snuck past
Emily Masursky. The goal was the first that Masursky gave up all season.
After the intermission the Seawolves wasted no time getting back in the lead, netting the go-ahead goal just 28 seconds into the second half. After a clear by the Gators,
Julia Betti fired a laser from 25 yards out that went over the leaping keepers head. The goal was Betti's first of the season.
Victoria Chavez would put the game away in the 50
th minute with the Seawolves third score of the match. Pritchard played a ball into the box that was mishandled by the keeper and fell at Chavez's feet. She calmly collected the ball and placed it into the net for her first goal of the season.
Sonoma State's defense did the rest, holding the Gators without a shot for the final 40 minutes of action.
In addition to winning the CCAA championship, SSU clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. The tournament is slated to start next Friday with the Seawolves taking on the winner of the San Francisco State and Cal State LA clash.
