ROHNERT Park, Calif. – The Sonoma State men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season with an impressive 2-0 win over Western Washington on Saturday. The Seawolves played a complete game, dominating on all fronts and used second half goals by
Brian Field and
Mateo Pasqua to come out victorious.
The first half saw both teams settling in and recording four shots apiece in a scoreless 45 minutes. The Seawolves had two great chances in the first but one point blank save on a shot by
Sebastian Bernal-Santos kept Sonoma off the board. In the waning minutes of the first goalie
Derik Engebretsen kept the Vikings off the board with a fantastic save on a breakaway.
"In our loss to Seattle Pacific, I thought we dominated and had more chances but they had a guy stepped up and score his two chances. Today, we challenged our guys to step up in the moment and in the first half Derik Engebretsen made a huge save to keep it 0-0 and giving us a great chance to take over the game in second half." - Head Coach Marcus Ziemer
The Seawolves would do just that, tallying 14 shots in the second half while limiting Western Washington to just three. The break thru would came in the 53
rd minute when
Brian Field headed home a cross from Shane Rohane. Field out lept a pack of defenders at the back post to knock the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Field nearly added a brace in the 70
th minute but his flick clanged off the crossbar keeping it a one score game. In the 78
th minute the Seawolves would get their insurance goal with a connection from two substitutes.
Grayson Stewart sent a long ball from the right side that found its way through the defense and at the feet of Pasqua. He would then take a couple touches, gather and slot a right footed shot around the goalie and inside the far post.
The defense closed the game out from there with a great effort from the backline and two saves from Engebretsen.
"Today was huge for us! Western Washington are a very good team and after our tough loss on Thursday I was proud of how the boys bounced back. Our depth really paid off today and we were able to use our bench to keep the tempo high and tire them out." - Ziemer
Field and Pasqua each recorded their first goal of the season with Rohane and Stewart picking up their first assists. The shutout was also Engebretson's first clean sheet of the young season but the Seawolves had players step up all over the field.
"We had some players step up big. Miles Hodgson was huge at left back and Timmy Phillips and Johnnie Dodge were incredible in midfield on both sides of the ball. Mateo came in and scored a big goal to put the game away." - Ziemer
The Seawolves hit the road next week for a pair of tough matchups against two more GNAC opponents.
"We will enjoy this win for a day and then get ready for our next opponents. Simon Frasier and Saint Martin's will be tough, but we are excited to hit the road and complete. I really like our group, we are a mix of cagey veterans and experienced newcomers and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish this year." - Ziemer
