HAYWARD, Calif. - The Sonoma State women's basketball team hung tough with No. 21 ranked Cal State East Bay but ultimately fell 68-58 on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves moved to 5-5 on the season in CCAA play and currently sit in 5th place in the conference standings.
The Pioneers got going early, scoring three first seven points of the game and leading 13-5 just after the halfway point. SSU answered back with the next six points on baskets by
Amanda Luckett,
Camille Johnson and
Alli McDonald. The quarter would end with five straight from CSUEB as the game moved to second quarter at 18-11.
Zane Sheckherd and
Jayme Blackard opened the second with back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to three and
Chasity Spady later knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 20-18. After a 7-0 run by the Pioneers, Johnson scored six in a row on her own to pull the Seawolves back within three at the 2:29 mark. A late triple by Cal State East Bay sent the game to halftime at 32-25.
Sheckherd knocked down an early 3-pointer to pull SSU back to within four but that would be as close as they would get. The Pioneers used threes for their first four baskets of the third and extended their advantage to 12. The lead swelled to as many as 15 in the quarter as each time the Seawolves scored their basket was answered by CSUEB.
The Seawolves cut the lead down to ten several times in the fourth but could not get any closer. Johnson scored ten points in the fourth with SSU having their best offensive quarter with 20.
Johnson finished with a game and career 18 points, including hitting 9 of 10 from the free-throw-line. Sheckherd added 12 points and five rebounds while Luckett tacked on eight points and missed just one shot.
Sonoma State returns home this week for a pair of games against Stanislaus State and Chico State at the Wolves' Den.
