ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team did it again, winning their third straight CCAA Championship with a 3-1 win over San Francisco State on Thursday. The Seawolves finished conference play with a 7-2-2 record, tying Stanislaus State in first place but earning the top seed in next week's tournament with a head-to-head victory over the Warriors.
SSU wasted little time jumping out on the Gators, scoring three goals in the first 22 minutes to seal the win. The first score came in the 9
th minute when
Annette Sotelo deflected in a shot from
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa on the goal line for her 7
th goal of the season.
In the 16
th minute the Seawolves struck again with
Julia Horner-Bell notching her first career score on Senior Day. Horner-Bell ran onto a long rebound and fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net for the goal. Six minutes later Sonoma State made it 3-0 with Horner-Bell prominently involved once again. This time she played a long pass into the box that snuck past the charging goalie and rolled towards the net. Zandonella-Arasa ran onto the ball and touched it into the empty net for her 13
th goal of the season.
San Francisco State got one back in the 37
th minute when Kerby Britton headed home a long free kick and make it 3-1 before halftime. Neither team would score in the second half despite several strong chances. The Seawolves held a 19-7 shot advantage for the game, including a 9-4 margin on shots on goal.
Kennedy Williams and
Phoebe Barnes combined for the win in net with three total saves.
Zandonella-Arasa finishes the regular season with a conference and region leading 13 goals, 9 assists and 35 points.
Andrea Lozano recorded two assists for the game, starting the first goal with a short corner pass and then taking the shot that was rebounded by Horner-Bell for the second score.
The Seawolves set at 11-3-3 on the season and currently rank 5
th in the West Region. They will host the CCAA Tournament next Friday with the 11:30 am kick-off against the winner of Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt on Sunday.
