WSOC: Two Second Half Goals Lift Seawolves Past Cal State Monterey Bay

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team scored two goals in under two minutes in the second half to cap of their comeback and defeat Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1.  The Seawolves improved to 8-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in CCAA play with the victory.

The first half started with the team's trading shots early and both goalie making big stops to keep the game scoreless.  In the 20th minute Kennedy Williams made a leaping save for SSU to keep the Otters of the board but the visitors would new a goal just a minute later.  Amelia McManus finished off a low cross from Jasmine Safarians to put CSUMB on top early in the contest.

After the goal the Seawolves offense got going, recording the next five shots of the game but came up empty handed to close out the first half.

Sonoma State came out firing in the second half, putting the offensive pressure on from the start.  They nearly evened the score just over a minute into the half when Andrea Lozano had her shot stopped by a diving Melani Morales.  In the 55th minute Lozano was back at it, this time tying the game with a goal at the back post.  Lexi Zandonella-Arasa beat a defender on the left side and sent a cross from the goalline to Lozano who knocked it into the net.  The goal was her second of the season while Zandonella-Arasa picked up her sixth assist.

Just under two minutes later the Seawolves struck again to take the lead.  This time, Malia Falk played a pass from the left side to the top of the box.  Julia Pritchard took the ball down, beat a defender and headed towards goal.  She touched the ball forward and then slid the right-footer shot around the goalie for the go-ahead score.  The goal was Pritchard's second of the year.

The Seawolves defense did the rest, not allowing the Otters to get the tying goal for the final 29 minutes.  Krissy Keller made a fantastic sliding block in the closing minutes on CSUMB's best chance for an equalizer.

Williams picked up the win in net for SSU with two saves, both coming in the first half.  Sonoma State picked up 23 shots for the contest, 16 of which came in the second half.

SSU heads south next week for a pair of games in Southern California.  The Seawolves will take on Cal State LA on Friday evening before meeting Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon.
