BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team fell to Point Loma 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
The two teams started back-and-forth from the start with the Sealions taking the first two shots of the game before SSU recorded the next two.
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa notched three straight shots for the Seawolves, including a header that was stopped by the goalie. In the 28
th minute PLNU broke through with a free kick into the box that saw two players behind the defense.
Kennedy Williams made a great save on the first attempt but the rebound was knocked in by Mara Sovda for the 1-0 lead. The Seawolves nearly evened the score in the waning minutes but
Ashley Frye's shot was blocked off the line to keep it scoreless.
The Seawolves came out strong in the second half, controlling possession and pushing forward throughout the half. Sonoma State sent several crosses into the box but could not finish them off. The best chance came in the 85
th minute when
Malia Falk got on the end of a serve from
Julia Horner-Bell but Julia Pinnell once again came up with the save.
The Seawolves made their 7
th straight appearance in the tournament and ended the season with a 12-5-3 record.
