WSOC: Seawolves Upended by Fresno Pacific 60-53

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team fell to Fresno Pacific on Saturday night 60-53 after struggling in the second and third quarters.  The Seawolves saw their record evened up at 1-1 after a season opening win against host Dominican on Friday.

Sonoma State found themselves down early as FPU jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of action.  Taylor Johnson stopped the run with a 3-pointer and Camille Johnson followed with a basket to cut the deficit to 9-5.  The Seawolves were not done however, scoring 12 more to cap off a 17-0 run and lead by eight.  Taylor Johnson finished the quarter off with a basket plus the foul to give SSU a 20-13 advantage after one.

The Seawolves kept the seven-point lead until the halfway point before the Sunbirds became chipping away.  Sonoma State scored just eight points in the second while FPU netted 15 and took a 29-28 lead into the break.

Amanda Luckett and Jayme Blackard opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets to regain a three-point margin.  Luckett later scored again to make it 35-30 but FPU was about to flip the game.  The Sunbirds closed the final five minutes of the third with 13 straight point and ended the quarter up 43-35.

Fresno Pacific pushed their advantage up to 13 after another run in the fourth and led 55-42 with just 3:22 remaining.  The Seawolves had one more run in them, using triples from Cielo Gonzalez and Alli McDonald on consecutive possessions to make it a 55-48 contest.  Gonzalez then sank two free-throws and McDonald drained another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just two with 55 ticks remaining,  McDonald then blocked a shot on the defensive end but the Sunbirds got the rebound and hit a 3-pointer to put the game away and seal the win.

McDonald finished with a game high 13 points and added seven points and three blocks.  Gonzalez tacked on nine points and five assists.

The Seawolves are back in action next weekend when they head to Chico State for the CCAA/GNAC Challenge.  They will take on Saint Martins on Friday and Western Oregon on Saturday.
