ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team earned a trip to the CCAA Tournament Final on Sunday with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over Chico State. After a scoreless 90 minutes the two teams combined for three goals in the overtimes with the Seawolves netting two in under two minutes in the second.
The game started with both teams feeling out the pace and SSU recording the first shot in the 5
th minute. After that the Chico State offense registered the next six shots of the half, including one that grazed the top of the crossbar. In the waning second the Seawolves played a long ball over the defense that
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa powered past the goalie but was ruled to be just after the buzzer sounded.
The second half featured a much more open game with the two teams combining for 13 shots but again coming up empty. The Seawolves best chance came in the 86
th minute when Zandonella-Arasa sent a free kick to the far post that was headed just over the bar by
Krissy Keller.
After regulation ended 0-0 the game moved into two 10-minute overtime periods. The Wildcats struck first, drawing a penalty kick after a collision in the box in the 95
th minute. Goalie Emma Hofmann took the PK and buried it into the right side of the next for the 1-0 lead. The rest of the period passed without a score and the Seawolves entered the second OT with ten minutes of life left.
Sonoma State wasted little time getting back into the game, knotting the game at 1-1 on an incredible goal by senior defender
Julia Pritchard. Pritchard received a pass from Makenna Macadoo about 25 yards from the goal. She took the pass down, turned and hit a shot that dipped just below the bar and into the back of the next.
Less than two minutes later the Seawolves saw themselves with a penalty kick and a chance for the lead.
Malia Falk played a pass into the box that put
Annette Sotelo inside a defender with a chance for a shot. Sotelo was dragged down by the defender to earn the PK. Zandonella-Arasa stepped up the spot and drilled the kick into the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.
The Sonoma State defense did the rest, limiting the Wildcats to two shots over the final seven minutes but neither proved to be dangerous. The Seawolves advanced to the CCAA Championship Game for the fifth straight time, dating back to 2017.
Zandonella-Arasa added to her CCAA and West Region leading total with her 14
th goal of the season while Pritchard netted her 3
rd score.
Kennedy Williams and
Phoebe Barnes combined to make six saves in net for SSU with Williams recording four of them.
The Seawolves will face Cal State LA on Sunday for a 1:00 pm kick-off. Ticket, live stream and live stats information can be found at the
