WBB: Seawolves Hold Off Chico State with Late 70-69 Win

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team closed out the week with their third straight victory, winning a wild one at home on Saturday afternoon 70-69 over Chico State.  The Seawolves led for the first 37 minutes and then used a clutch free-throw by Jayme Blackard with 3.1 seconds left to pull out the win.  SSU moved to 5-6 on the season with the win and are now 2-3 in CCAA play.

Sonoma State started the game red hot, opening with a 10-0 run in the first two minutes.  Alli McDonald drained a 3-pointer on the opening possession and Amanda Luckett followed with a layup.  On the next possession, Cielo Gonzalez sank a triple and then McDonald added a basket off an offensive rebound.  The Wildcats scored the next six points and stayed within four until Emerson Herrmann bookended a 3-pointer by Taylor Johnson with a pair of buckers to make it 19-10.  Johnson ended the quarter with another basket and the Seawolves took a 21-13 lead into the second.

Chico State chipped the deficit down to six in the second before Chasity Spady scored seven straight points to give the Seawolves a 13-point advantage.  Spady hit a jumper and followed with a triple and a pair of free-throws to cap off the run.  After a pair of freebies for the Wildcats, Johnson and Spady knocked down back-to-back threes and to make it a 17-point game with 3:31 left in the half.  Chico State closed the half on an 8-3 run to make it 39-27 at the break.

Spady continued her offensive explosion in the third quarter, notching seven more points including another 3-pointer as the Seawolves stretched their lead to as many as 20.  Camille Johnson also got going during the run, scoring five points in the third.  Chico State however would not go away, closing the second on a 14-4 run and knocking that 20-point lead down to just 10.

McDonald opened the fourth with a 3-pointer of her but the Wildcats responded with a 17-3 run to take their first lead of the game at the 2:59 mark.  Gonzalez put the Seawolves back on top at the 2-minute mark with a pair of free-throws but Chico State regain the lead on the next possession with a layup.  After an empty possession by both teams, Gonzalez struck again, converting a layup plus the free-throw to make it 69-67 with just 33 ticks remaining.  The Wildcats once again had an answer, evening the score at 69-69.  Sonoma State would then advance the ball and Blackard drew a foul with just 3.1 seconds remaining and headed to the line.  She calmly sank the first one to put the Seawolves back on top before the Wildcats rebounded the second try and called a timeout with 2.4 left.  On the final play, Chico State's jumper missed and the follow-up did not get released before the final buzzer, sealing the second straight one-point win for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State shot 44% for the game, including a 10-20 from behind the arc.  Spady led the way with 17 points and four assists while Gonzalez added 14 of her own.  McDonald recorded her third double-double of the week with a 12-point, 11-rebound and four steal performance.  Kianna Maldia also tacked on four steals.

The Seawolves are off until 2023 when they host Humboldt State on New Years Day at The Wolves' Den.
