CARSON, CALIF. – On Saturday, December 3rd, the Sonoma State men's basketball team split their CCAA road trip after falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills 62-82. Despite the loss, sophomore phenom
Jaylen Wells went for a career high 31 points and converted a season high 12 field goals. SSU got behind the eight ball around midway through the first half as a 10-0 run from the Toros would give them control of the game and they would not look back.
Despite the 10-0 run, an 8-2 run from the Seawolves with buckets from
Jaylen Wells,
Nick Klarman, and
Josh Walker just after the midway point of the first half would pull the game back to within two points. In the final seven minutes of the half though, Dominguez Hills would rip off 5 straight buckets for a 13-0 run to give them a convincing 15-point lead. Both teams would trade buckets in the final two minutes but a layup in the closing seconds would give the Toros a 17-point lead, their largest of the half.
After fighting through the opening minutes of the second half, Dominguez Hills would rattle off another momentous 11-0 run to gain a 30-point lead. The Seawolves ultimately had too big of a hill to climb and would go on to lose 62-82, finishing their weekend of conference action 1-1. The Toros lit it up from three-point range in both halves, finishing the game 45% from that mark. The Seawolves would also finish with a game high 17 turnovers, in which Dominguez Hills would convert a significant 28 points off those turnovers to control the game in transition and take advantage of their additional possessions.
Sonoma State would shoot an efficient 45% from the field and nearly 92% from the free throw line, but just 3-13 from three-point range would contribute to the Toros margin of victory.
Jaylen Wells added another impressive individual performance to his weekend resume as he went for a career high 31 points, shooting 12-16 from the field. He would stand as the only Seawolf with double figures on the night.
First year Seawolf and Division I transfer
Austin Fadal would add 9 points in 22 minutes of action off the bench. Big man
Dillon Iyawe and forward
Brandynn Manning would combine for another 8 points off the bench as well. SSU would nearly double their first half total and go for an impressive 38 points on 46% shooting in the second half.
Sonoma State falls to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play. The Seawolves will regroup and return to the Wolves Den this week on Thursday, December 8th against Stanislaus State.
