BSB: Doubleheader Split Evens Out SSU’s record at 3-3

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Saturday, February 12th, the Sonoma State baseball team kicked off a jam packed Saturday with a double header against PacWest member Academy of Art. The Seawolves would split the two games on the day, winning the first 8-4 behind some solid relief pitching and then dropping the second 7-1.

ART U vs. Sonoma State DH #1:

Blake Janowicz would get his second start of the year but struggled to get out of the first inning after giving up 3 runs on 3 hits. Janowicz would hit the first batter of the game and then an RBI double and RBI single would plate the game's first two runs. Another double two batters later would give the Urban Knights an early 3-0 lead and force head coach John Goelz to go to the bullpen with only one out in the inning. Colton Peters would enter the game in his first appearance of the season and get two ground ball outs to get out of the jam.

Sonoma State would get all three runs back in the third inning as a hit by pitch and two walks would load the bases. An error from ART U's shortstop would plate one run and keep the bases loaded and then a four pitch walk to Jared Esparza would score the next run to make it 3-2. Nick Simmons would hit into a crucial double play but a run would score as a result and tie the game up at three. Academy of Art would get out of the jam but surrender their lead without giving up a hit in the inning. Peters would finish the first and throw two more scoreless innings giving up just 2 hits and striking out 2 batters.

The hits would finally pour in for the Seawolves in the bottom half of the fourth as Torreahno Sweet would make his SSU debut and single with one out in the inning to start the rally. After stealing second, a Braeden Holliday double on a bloop hit to shallow center field where he would hustle his way into second, scoring Sweet and giving SSU a 4-3 lead. Josh Lopez would come to the dish and hit another well placed bloop single to shallow right, scoring Holliday from second and adding to the Seawolves lead. Logan Douglas would finally put some barrel on a ball and rope a double down the left field line. With two outs, Lopez booked it around the bases and slid in to home safely scoring all the way from first base. SSU would put up a three spot and take a commanding 6-3 lead.

For the next three innings it was the Aidan Dolan show as he came in relief after Peters and threw three scoreless innings giving up just one hit on only 30 pitches. Dolan had everything working and was able to keep the hitters off balance with a power fastball and a hard moving curve. Dolan's three scoreless innings would prove to be the winning ones as SSU would hold on and win 8-4. After a hit batter started the inning for the Seawolves in the bottom of the sixth, Braeden Holliday continued his power hitting ways as he crushed a no doubter to deep left field to give SSU their 7th and 8th run of the game. Freshman left hander Ethan Glassman would follow and throw an inning and a third and then veteran utility player Joshua Medina would showcase his many talents and close out the game, throwing an inning and two thirds.

Dolan picked up his first win of the season with his scoreless outing in the middle innings. Torreahno Sweet would pick up a single and score two runs. Braeden Holiday was the offensive star of the day with 2 hits and 3 RBI's including his two-run blast to left field. Logan Douglas also finished 1-3 in the game with an RBI double.

ART U vs. Sonoma State DH #2:

In the second game of the day's doubleheader, Academy of Art would jump out early in the first and grab a 1-0 lead off of a sac fly to center field after a leadoff walk and a misplayed bunt to put runners on. Nick Roth would get his first start for SSU and get back-to-back fly outs to get out of the jam. Transfer Otis Statum would continue to break out of his early slump and pick up Roth in the second with an absolute bomb over the center field batter's eye to tie the game up. Unfortunately the solo shot would prove to be the Seawolves only run of the game as it was all Urban Knights.

Cannon Secrist would throw a gem for ART U as he went six strong innings allowing 4 hits and giving up just 1 run. He would also add 8 strikeouts to his line to help earn him his second win of the season. Roth would only last two innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Head coach john Goelz would use five pitchers on the day to get through the game as they suffered the 7-1 loss.

Ezele Wicks, Joshua Medina, Otis Statum, and Sean Pauly would be the only Seawolves to record a hit in the game. Sean Pauly would make his Seawolf debut in the game as a freshman and certainly provided a spark early on as he made arguably the catch of the year so far for SSU. To help limit the damage in the first inning, Pauly made an unreal catch on the right field fence, robbing a home run and nearly doubling off the runner on first to keep it a one run game. After Statum's homer in the second, Pauly would follow it up with a first pitch double to left center to help ignite the Seawolf dugout.

Sonoma State falls to 3-3 on the season after splitting today's doubleheader. The Seawolves will return to action next Friday at Seawolf Diamond as they continue their non-conference play against Fresno Pacific.
