SB: Seawolves Sweep Academy of Art Behind Two Dominant Pitching Performances

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team extended their winning streak to five with a sweep of Academy of Art on Wednesday afternoon.  The Seawolves used an explosive offense in the first game and dominant pitching performances to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Sonoma State wasted little time getting on the board in the first game, plating three in the bottom of the first inning.  Rylee Nishimoto and Cassidy Romano opened with back-to-back singles and promptly pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position.  Jordyn Martinez drove them both in a couple pitches later with a triple to the left field wall to make to 2-0.  Martinez would later score on a wild pitch as the game moved to second at 3-0.

The Seawolves offense was back at it in the third, scoring two more runs to push the margin to 5-0.  Nishimoto once again got things started with a single and a steal.  She would score on a squeeze bunt from Martinez for the first run of the inning.  The next batter, Giana Hays singled to give the Seawolves runners on the corner before a steal and wild pitch allowed Martinez to score.

Academy of Art finally got to starter Jesse Dupuis in the fourth after three scoreless innings.  The Urban Knights used a homerun from Haley Randall to score a pair of runs and pull within three at 5-2.  That would be as close as they would get with Sonoma getting both runs back in the bottom half of the fifth.  Romano and Martinez both reach on singles and both stole second base to put runner on second and third.  Hays would then load the bases with a fielder's choice before Skylar Linnane drove home Romano with a single.  Lauren Mirtoni followed with an RBI single of her own to make it 7-2.

The Seawolves would end the game for good in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run frame.  Nishimoto reached on an error and stole her third base of the game and Romano reached after being hit by a pitch.  Two batters later Hays belted a homerun to dead centerfield to make it 10-2.

Dupuis picked up her third straight win on the rubber for SSU with a complete game gem.  She allowed just four hits and struck out five to improve to 3-0.  Offensively Hays and Martinez both finished with two hits, three RBIs and a steal.  Hays added her first homerun of the season while Martinez scored three runs.  Nishimoto and Romano set the tone at the top of the lineup combining for four hits, six runs and five steals.

The second game was a pitchers' duel from the start as SSU starter Nichole Sarra and ARTU pitcher Jolene Rhoades were in command.  Sarra worked her way thru the first two innings and pitcher her way out of a two-runners-on situation in the first.

The Seawolves offense loaded the bases in the first but came up empty before scoring a run in the bottom of the second.  Natasha Ochoa got the rally started with a two out double and would come around to score on a single by Amari Houston.

Sarra and a strong Seawolves' defense did the rest from there, shutting out the Knights over the final four innings.  Sarra allowed just four runners to reach base after the third inning and stranded all of them, including getting two tough outs to end the sixth with a runner on third base.  She picked up her first win of the season with the four-hit shutout while striking out four.
