WBB: Seawolves Topple Cal State San Bernardino to Pull into Tie for 6th in CCAA

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team used a stellar night from the free-throw line to take down Cal State San Bernardino 70-62.  The Seawolves made 22 of 25 from the charity stripe to even their CCAA record at 8-8 and pull into a tie with Stanislaus State for the final spot in the conference tournament.

The game was competitive from the start with the teams combining for 11 lead changes and 11 ties.  The Seawolves broke a 6-6 tie early in the game with baskets by Camille Johnson and Amanda Luckett and a 3-pointer by Taylor Johnson to take a 15-12 lead into the second.

The Coyotes and Seawolves traded baskets to open the second with CSUSB retaking the lead at 22-21.  Sonoma State responded with a 14-0 run over the next three minutes.  Johnson started the run with five straight points and later added two more free-throws.  Zane Sheckherd added a 3-pointer and two free-throws of her own to extend the lead to 13.  San Bernardino closed the half with eight straight points to make it 35-30 at the break.

The third quarter was back-and-forth once again as the Coyotes started with six straight to take a 36-35 lead.  Cielo Gonzalez ended the run with a triple and Johnson later converted a four-point play after draining a three plus the foul.  Luckett added a layup on the next possession to make it a six point contest but once again CSUSB would not go away scoring eight straight.  The teams swapped baskets from there to end the third tied at 51-51.

The Seawolves put the game away to start the fourth, opening the period with a 12-1 run to gain a double-digit advantage once again.  Luckett and Gonzalez combined for nine of the 12 points during the run.  Sonoma State would ice the game from the line down the stretch to finish the game with a 70-62 win.

Johnson led all players with a game high 18 points while Sheckherd added 14 points and nine rebounds.  Gonzalez tacked on 11 with Johnson and Luckett both reaching double figures off the bench with 11 and 10 respectively.

Sonoma closes out their road trip on Saturday afternoon with a contest against Cal Poly Pomona at 1:00 pm.  Live stats and video available at www.sonomaseawolves.com
