WBB: Seawolves Drop Home Tilt with Cal State San Marcos

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team squared off with the No. 21 team in country on Thursday night, falling to Cal State San Marcos 69-57.  The Seawolves moved to 8-10 in CCAA play with the loss while the Cougars improved to 18-1.

SSU started slow offensively, making just one of their first ten shots and falling behind 15-2 late in the first quarter.  Cielo Gonzalez made four straight free-throws and Camille Johnson added another to head to the second down 17-7.

Johnson opened the second with a jumper to make it an eight point game and Taylor Johnson later knocked down a pair of freebies to cut it down to seven at the 5:11 mark.  From there neither team scored over the next three minutes before CSUSM ripped off five in a row.  The Cougars pushed the margin up to 13 in the final minute but Johnson's jumper in the closing seconds sent the game to the half at 32-21.

Cal State San Marcos caught fire in the third quarter, extending their lead to as many as 25 in the closing minute.  Kianna Maldia and Aaryn Pickett both hit 3-pointers for the Seawolves in the final 35 seconds to see the deficit cut to 19.

After the lead moved back to 20 the Seawolves went on a run of their own, recording a 14-3 spurt to pull within nine at the 4:35 mark.  Gonzalez and Maldia both hit triples with Zane Sheckherd adding five straight during the run.  The Cougars closed the door after that with seven straight points to get the lead back over 15.

Pickett led Sonoma State with 13 points including 3 of 5 shooting from behind the arc.  Johnson tacked on 11 while Gonzalez finished with nine off the bench.  Sheckherd and Maldia both scored eight points with Maldia adding a game high four steals.

The Seawolves postseason chances come down to Saturday afternoon when they take on Cal State LA at The Wolves' Den.  A win clinches the six seed in the CCAA Tournament.  Saturday will also mark Senior Day for Sonoma State as they honor Zane Sheckherd and Aaryn Pickett with a ceremony before the game.
