BSB: Goelz and Squad Look Forward to CCAA Home Opener with Otters

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - After a non-ideal start for head coach John Goelz and the SSU baseball team, the Seawolves will turn the page and look forward to their home opener this weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay. Sonoma State had a very competitive non-conference campaign as they grabbed a wins over PacWest foes Holy Names and Academy of Art and were well in the other games with both teams and Fresno Pacific, their last series before opening up conference play with Chico State. The long ball has been a pleasant surprise for the Seawolves as several players have recorded their first homers of the season including power hitters Otis Statum and Braeden Holliday who each have combined for 5 homers on the season. Veteran utility player Joshua Medina has also continued his stellar Seawolf career as he's off to a hot start posting a plus .300 batting average, a plus .600 slugging percentage, and recording 15 total hits good for the team lead. Medina's power is also coming through at the plate as he has 5 extra base hits and is tied for the team lead with 3 home runs. Medina and Holliday also both sit inside the top-10 in all of the CCAA in homers and slugging percentage.

Sonoma State dropped the final game of their four game series with the 16th ranked Wildcats of Chico State on Sunday, 3-11, leaving them winless in conference play. Despite some lopsided scores, Sonoma State held leads and played competitive innings in the final three games of the series. They would also combine for 36 hits as a team in the four games and record a season high 13 hits in game one. After starting the season just 2-26 from the plate, senior shortstop Nick Simmons would break out of his early slump with a productive four games against the Wildcats. Simmons would go 7-13 from the dish in the series and record 2 doubles, 2 RBI's, and a run scored. He would record multiple hits in two of the four games.
