SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball struggled to find the basket on Saturday afternoon, falling 62-53 to Cal State Monterey Bay. The loss moved the Seawolves to 6-7 in CCAA play but sit just one game back in the race for the conference tournament.
The game started back-and-forth with the teams trading buckets for the first eight minutes.
Chasity Spady and
Camille Johnson combined for nine of the first ten SSU points before
Amanda Luckett knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 13-11. From there the Seawolves went cold, not scoring again for nearly seven minutes and finding themselves on the wrong end of a 21-2 run. Trailing 32-15, Sonoma clawed back into the game with ten straight points, seven of which came from
Alli McDonald. The Otters ended the half with a triple to take a 35-25 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would ultimately sink the Seawolves chances at a comeback as they would score only five points and turn the ball over seven times. Sonoma made just one of six shots and saw their deficit grow to as many as 15.
After Monterey opened the fourth with another 3-pointer to stretch their lead to 18 the Seawolves ripped off a 16-6 run to pull within single digits.

Taylor Johnson and
Cielo Gonzalez all sank threes during the run as SSU trailed by eight with 3:41 remaining. The Otters put the game away in the final minutes hitting all eight of the free-throws to seal the victory.
The Seawolves shot just 35% for the game including just 22% combined in the second and third quarters. McDonald led the team with 14 points while Sheckherd added 11. Johnson tacked on nine points on 3 of 6 shooting.
Sonoma State returns home next week for another pair of CCAA contests as they take on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay. Fans will not be permitted on February 10th but the doors will open again for the February 12th game.
