ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team never trailed on Friday, sweeping the No. 22 team in the country Cal State Monterey Bay 3-2 and 8-4. The Seawolves used a pair of stellar pitching performances from
Camille Rodriguez and Jesse Dupuis to go with some timely hits to move to 13-12 on the season.
Rodriguez was in control from the start for the Seawolves, hurling 3.2 no-hit innings to begin the game and cruising through four scoreless innings. Offensively, Sonoma State got going in the third with a leadoff single by
Skylar Linnane.
Amari Houston pinch ran and promptly stole second before moving to third on a single by
Courtney Jack. Jack and Houston then pulled off a double steal with Houston taking home for the game's first run. Later in the inning
Rylee Nishimoto walked and
Jordyn Martinez followed with a two-run triple to make it 3-0.
The Otters got two back in the top of 5
th, drawing a walk off Rodriguez before she was replaced by
Nichole Sarra. CSUMB then loaded the base and plated a run on a single to left and another on a walk. Rodriguez came back into the game with two-outs and the bases loaded and got the final out of the inning on a flyout to end the rally.
Rodriguez took care of the rest from there, retiring the Otters in order in the sixth and getting the final three outs in the seventh with a runner on. She allowed just one hit, a single, in the 6.2 innings of work while striking out two and improving to 6-4 on the season.
The Seawolves offense took care of the second game, scoring in the first, second and third innings to go ahead 7-0 on their way to an 8-4 win.
Anna Zoia-Buescher led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and stole second. Two batters later Martinez belted two-strike pitch over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead.
Sonoma State was back at it in the second with Linnane starting the inning with a double. She came in to score on a single by
Reagan Hunt to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Nishimoto singled and Martinez was hit by a pitch to load the bases for
Cassidy Romano. She would reach on an error, allowing two more runs to score and pushing the margin to five.
The scoring continued in the third inning with Linnane and Jack reaching on back-to-back singles. Zoia-Buesche delivered a two-out double to score Linnane and Jack came later on an error off the bat of Nishimoto.
On the runner, Dupuis moved through the Otter lineup unscathed until the fourth when Ally Alcayaga recorded a two-run homerun to make it 7-2. CSUMB would get two more unearned runs off Dupuis in the fifth to pull to 7-4 but that would be as close as it would get.
Hays added an insurance run for the Seawolves in the bottom of the sixth with a solo blast to left and Dupuis got the final three outs in the seventh to seal the win. She moved to 6-1 on the season with a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four.
The Seawolves racked up 11 hits in the game with seven different batters recording at least one. Zoia-Buescher, Hays, Linnane and Hunt picked up multi-hit games while Martinez had a pair of RBIs.
