SAN MARCOS, CALIF. - On Thursday, April 14th the Sonoma State baseball team began their four-game series against the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos after coming off a series win over Stanislaus State the weekend prior. The Seawolves offense had a slow start to the series as they dropped game one on Thursday afternoon 6-1 to the Cougars. San Marcos was able to put up 11 hits and score at least one run in five of the first six innings. Junior right hander
Tanner Kane recorded his first start of the season but failed to get out of the second inning as he gave up three runs and two walks.
Kane would struggle to find the zone early as he hit the lead off batter of the game followed by a six pitch walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. A throwing error and then double play from the Seawolf Defense would allow two runs to come in before Kane would induce a fly out to get out of the inning.
Kane would start the second inning but throw a four pitch walk and then his second wild pitch before getting pulled allowing
Ross Goldschlag to come in relief and make his sixth appearance of the season. Goldschlag would get a fly out the very next batter but the cougars would eventually get a run home off of a sac bunt to extend their lead 3-0. Goldschlag would produce an inning ending ground ball double play to get out of the jam and limit the damage to just one run. Goldschlag would put in nearly three innings of work allowing just one run in his 59 pitches as he put together one of his better outings of the season.
Senior right hander
Vito Rodin would follow Goldschlag and finish off the fourth inning as he also put together one of his better relief performances of the season. Rodin would throw a season high 2.1 innings giving up just two runs on his 32 pitches. Sophomore right hander
Colton Peters would finish off the seventh and eighth inning in his sixth appearance of the season. Peters has been a stable arm out of the bullpen for the Seawolves as he threw two scoreless innings and dropped his ERA to 2.57 on the season.
The Seawolves offense would record just four hits in the contest coming from
Braeden Holliday,
Josh Lopez,
Cole Brodnansky and
Christopher Wright. A two out RBI double from Wright would represent the teams lone run of the game as he scored Lopez from third after he led off the top of the 9th with his 7th double of the season. Sonoma State would eventually fall 6-1 in the series opener as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive tomorrow afternoon against the Cougars.
