SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team did it again on Thursday afternoon, coming from behind for their fifth straight postseason win, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 4-3 in the first game of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake the Otters, winning on a walk-off single by
Courtney Jack.
SSU came into the game with a different lineup than usual, missing three starters. That did not stop them from scoring first however, plating the game's first run in the bottom of the second.
Lauren Mirtoni opened the inning with a double down the line to put a runner in scoring position. She moved over to third on a groundout and two batters later
Carissa Marquez, making her first career start singled to second base to score Mirtoni. The hit and RBI were both the first of Marquez's career.
Camille Rodriguez got through the first two innings in the circle without allowing a run but the Otters got to her in the third. After a lead off walk, Rodriguez got the next two batters but Ally Alcayaga delivered a two-run homerun to put Cal State Monterey on top 2-1.
Jesse Dupuis came on in relief of Rodriguez in the fifth after her scoreless fourth. Dupuis got through the fifth but the Otters were able to push one across in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead into the seventh.
The Seawolves' made magic happen in the seventh, all with two outs. Marquez reached on a walk to give SSU a baserunner early in the inning. After the second out, Hays stepped up and just missed an opposite field homerun, tripling off the top of the right field wall to score Marquez.
Rylee Nishimoto followed with a perfectly placed single to left to plate Hays and tie the game. CSUMB brought in Jensen Main to face
Jordyn Martinez with two down and a runner on. She singled into the hole at shortstop to move Nishimoto into scoring position. Jack then stepped up and ripped the first pitch to left field, allowing Nishimoto to score the walk-off run on a bobble by the left fielder.
Dupuis earned the win with three innings of work, allowing just one run. Martinez, Hays and Jack recorded two hits apiece including one each in the seventh inning.
The Seawolves are back in action Friday morning when they face Northwest Nazarene at 10:00 am. The winner clinches a berth in Saturday's regional title game. Live video and stats available at ncaa.com and ccaanetwotk.com
