SAN FRANCISCO – The Sonoma State women's soccer team used a goal in each half and a suffocating defense to prevail 2-0 over San Francisco State in the final non-conference match of the season. The Seawolves will enter CCAA play next week with a 4-1-1 record and have allowed just three goals in six games.
The first half started slow with neither team generating many offense chances in the early going. The game remained tied as the half drew under ten minutes and Sonoma State earned a corner kick.
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa played a short corner to
Ashley Frye on the right side. Frye took a touch and fired a shot from outside of the box that caught the goalie off her line and gave the Seawolves a 1-0 lead the break.
SSU wasted little time in the second half, scoring just under four minutes in to make it a 2-0 game. After drawing a foul and earning a free kick just inside the corner on the right side
Andrea Lozano sent the ball into the box. Zandonella-Arasa ran onto the pass and headed the ball towards the far post and past the diving keeper for the score. The goal was Zandonella-Arasa's team leading fifth of the season and upped her points total to 11.
The Seawolves defense did the rest, limiting the Gators to just one shot in the second half to earn their third shutout of the season.
Phoebe Barnes made three stops in net to earn the clean sheet.
SSU will open conference play on Friday with a home match against Chico State. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 PM and live stats, stream, and ticket links can be found at sonomaseawolves.com.
