ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team picked up their third victory in less than a week with a 1-0 shutout of Dominican on Monday evening. The Seawolves used a first half goal by
Malia Falk and a suffocating defense to hold onto the win.
SSU controlled the game from the start, putting the Penguins defense on their heals with seven shots in the first 22 minutes of the half. Four of those shots were on frame but turned away by the Dominican goalie. In the 24
th minute the Seawolves broke through on Falk's first goal of the season.
Krissy Keller played a free kick into the box from about 40 yards out that Falk volleyed out of the air and inside the right post.
Sonoma State nearly made it 2-0 before the break but
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa's shot from inside the box was stopped by a diving Jolie Poulet. The Seawolves defense allowed just one shot in the first 45 minutes of action.
The second half turned into more of a defensive battle after Sonoma State was forced to play with just 10 players after a red card in the 58
th minute. The Seawolves defense was up to the challenge, allowing just three shots in the final 32 minutes and earning their second shutout of the season. Overall, SSU outshot the Penguins 19-5 and goalie
Phoebe Barnes picked up the clean sheet with four saves.
The Seawolves are back in action on Thursday when they head to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State in a non-conference match.
