ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team continued their hot play on Thursday evening, sweeping Cal State San Marcos in the CCAA opener. The Seawolves extended their winning streak to seven matches and have won 12 consecutive sets to improve to 8-1 overall.
The first set opened with SSU jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. After the Cougars took the first point the Seawolves responded with eight of the next nine and led 8-2. They would extend their advantage to as many as nine at 21-9 and recorded the final two points on a kill and a block from
Emily Hernandez to earn a 25-17 win.
The Seawolves were even more impressive in the second set, hitting .680 with an incredible 17 kills and zero errors. Sonoma State racked up the 17 kills on just 25 attempts and scored the final eight points of the set to take a 17-12 lead and close it out at 25-12.
Kiana Richardson led the team with five kills in the set while
Jaden Krist and
Emily Hernandez.
The third set was closer at the start with the teams trading leads up until the halfway point. The Cougars led 13-12 before a four-point run put the Seawolves back on top for good. After leading 19-17, Sonoma State closed out the match with six straight points and then kill from
Jen Trephan at match point. The Seawolves racked up 19 kills in the final set, tying a season high. Trephan and Richardson registered four kills apiece in the final set to pace the team.
SSU finished with 48 kills while limiting Cal State San Marcos to just 28. The Seawolves also added 11 aces, six of which came from
Brynna Slayton.
Leilani Hallman had a perfect match with nine kills in nine attempts while Richardson led all players with 11. Krist (8), Hernandez (8) and Hobbs (7) combined for 23 kills and just five errors.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Cal State East Bay for a CCAA match at 3:00 pm.
