POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team closed out their road trip on Saturday afternoon with a huge 68-65 victory over Cal Poly Pomona. The win over the CCAA's third place team moved to Seawolves to 6-6 in conference play and 9-9 overall.
CPP started quick, scoring the first six points and led 8-2 early.
Taylor Johnson and Chasidy Spady answered with 3-pointers and
Camille Johnson added a bucket to pull SSU within one at 11-10. Johnson tacked on the next six Seawolves' points but they still trailed the Broncos as the first quarter wound down. Sonoma State pulled within one in the final minute but headed to the second quarter down 22-19.
Johnson kept the Seawolves close to open the second with four free-throws and Kiana Maldia drained a 3-pointer but SSU still trailed 35-31 at the halfway point.
Alli McDonald got going from there, tying the game with back-to-back layups and later hit a triple to put Sonoma State ahead by three. The team's traded free-throws to end the half with SSU leading 41-39 at the break.
After an opening 3-pointer by the Broncos put the home team back in the lead the Seawolves took over the game with an 11-0 run. McDonald and
Jayme Blackard each scored five points during the run that made it a 10-point game. The margin stretched to 11 at the end of third with back-to-back baskets by
Camille Johnson.
Amanda Luckett opened the fourth with a basket and
Taylor Johnson added a 3-pointer to put the Seawolves ahead by 15 with just over eight minutes remaining. The Broncos would not go away however, using a 9-0 run to pull back within five in the final minute.
Taylor Johnson sank a pair of free-throws to end the run but Cal Poly Pomona would not go away. CPP chipped their deficit to just two before Maldia made a free-throw to make it a three-point game with 16 ticks remaining. The Seawolves got the stop on the defensive end, forcing a long-range airball to seal the win.
Sonoma State's defense and rebounding was the story of the game, limiting the Broncos to just 31% from the field, including just 24% in the second half. The Seawolves also held a 45-26 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Camille Johnson finished with a game high and career high 19 points while adding six rebounds and two steals. McDonald tacked on a big double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Taylor Johnson also reached double figures with 11 points and Maldia delivered a great all-around performance with five points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Seawolves return home next week for a pair of games at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma State will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 5:30 pm before a Pack the Den showdown with San Francisco State on Saturday evening.
