WBB: Seawolves Takedown San Francisco State for Third Straight Win

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team notched their third straight victory on Saturday evening, toppling San Francisco State 71-53.  The Seawolves led the entire way, breaking the game open in the second half to improve to 11-9 overall and 8-6 in CCAA play.

SSU jumped out early, scoring the first eight points of the game and never looking back.  Cielo Gonzalez opened the game with a score and Amanda Luckett netted the next four.  All five Seawolves starters scored in the quarter as Alli McDonald and Jayme Blackard recorded the next two baskets and Taylor Johnson hit a 3-pointer to make it an 11-point game.

Sonoma State took an eight-point advantage into the second and quickly extended it to 13 with a jumper and a 3-pointer by McDonald.  Luckett later added a pair of free-throws and Chasity Spady hit a floater but the Gators hit a pair of late 3-pointers to make it a 36-30 game at halftime.

The Seawolves broke the game open in the third quarter with a 12-0 run to turn a six-point lead into an 18-point game.  Blackard started the run with a basket and McDonald and Gonzalez combined for the next ten.  Gonzalez netted six of those before Kianna Maldia made it a 19-point margin with her second triple of the season.

San Francisco State had one more run in them in the fourth, cutting the deficit to ten with an 8-0.  The Seawolves answered right back, holding the Gators to just one point over the final five minutes.  The offensive meanwhile scored nine points with Camille Johnson capping off the run with a basket plus the free-throw.

The Seawolves defense dominated on the night, holding SFSU to 27% from the field and forcing 15 turnovers.  SSU also held a 46-34 rebounding advantage and recorded 23 second chance points.  Offensively the attack was very balanced with McDonald and Luckett scoring 15 points apiece.  McDonald finished with eight rebounds while Luckett grabbed seven.  Gonzalez finished with an excellent all-around game, pitching in 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and a career high six steals.  Fellow starters Taylor Johnson and Blackard tacked on eight points each.

Sonoma State heads on the road next week for a pair of games as they take on Stanislaus State and Chico State.  The Seawolves are currently sixth in the CCAA and are two games clear of the seventh spot for a berth in the conference tournament.
