WBB: Seawolves Keep Rolling, Win Sixth Straight

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball continued their hot play on Saturday evening, picking up their sixth straight win with a 58-48 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.  The win was also the fifth straight in conference to move the Seawolves to 5-3 in the CCAA and 8-6 overall.

The game stayed close for the first five minutes with the teams trading baskets and SSU leading 7-6 at the halfway point of the quarter.  From there the Seawolves took over, finishing the first on a 13-2 run to take a 20-8 lead into the second.  Five different Sonoma State players scored during the run with Chasity Spady capping it off with a 3-pointer.

Camille Johnson, Amanda Luckett and Alli McDonald all scored in the first two minutes of the second to extend the margin to 17.  McDonald added four more points in the quarter as the Seawolves kept the double-digit advantage and led 33-19 at the break.

The Otters chipped the deficit down to ten in the opening minutes of the third but Sonoma State answered with a 16-5 run over the next seven minutes.  Donnelli Allen drained a key triple and McDonald tacked on five points to spur the run.  Spady, Luckett and Emerson Herrmann each recorded a basket as the Seawolves looked to pull away.

Leading by 17 heading into the fourth the Sonoma State lead began to shrink as the Otters got hot from distance.  After pulling within eight, Spady and McDonald each netted a pair of free-throws to push it back to 12.  The Otters would once more pull back within eight but McDonald scored the final basket of the game to seal the win for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State's defense once again led the way, holding their opponent under 50 points for the second time this week.  Cal State Monterey Bay shot just 32% from the field with the Seawolves also holding a 37-27 rebounding advantage.

McDonald was unstoppable on the night, finishing with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and a pair of blocks.  She hit 9 of 14 shots and all five of her free-throws to notch her fifth double-double of the season.  Spady added nine points and Jayme Blackard finished with seven points and a season high four steals.

Sonoma State returns home this week for a pair of CCAA contests at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves will host Cal State San Marcos on Thursday night and Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon.
