ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team suffered a tough defeat at home on Thursday, surrendering a pair of second half goals in a 2-1 loss. The Seawolves led at the break on a goal by
Kastle Lyman but could not keep the Wildcats off the board in the second.
SSU controlled the pace in the first half, maintaining possession in the offense half and providing several dangerous opportunities.
Renee Ketner delivered the first one, ripping a shot from the left side that was stopped by a diving Emma Hofmann to keep it scoreless.
The game remained knotted at 0-0 until the 38
th minute. The Seawolves drew a foul just past the centerline and
Julia Betti played the free kick into the box. After the first touch wento the Wildcats,
Jenna Dean sent a looping header towards the goal. Hofmann was able to back track get the save but the ball landed in front of the goal. Ketner's then took a shot that was block and bounced right to Lyman. Lyman calmly buried the shot inside the right post for her first career goal.
Sonoma State put two more shots on frame in the opening 45 but
Hailey Freeman and Betti's attempts were stopped by Hofmann to send the game to halftime still at 1-0. The Seawolves held a 10-8 shot advantage in the half, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on target.
The Wildcats wasted little time evening the score in the second half, tying the contest in the 49
th minute. Camryn Toole sent a looper cross in from the right corner that was knocked in at the back post by Hannah Pieri. SSU nearly got back on top just a few minutes later but Betti's free kick from distance hit off the crossbar and out of play.
Chico State netted the game-winner in the 61
st minute when Madison Noll perfectly placed a shot just under the bar for a 2-1 advantage. The Wildcat defense did the rest from there, holding SSU to just one shot and clearing any danger from their side.
Lolo Retsky made six saves in net for Sonoma State, including four in the second half. Chico State held a 17-13 shot advantage for the contest with 9 coming in the second half.
