ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The 2023 Senior Day proved to be a memorable one for the Sonoma State volleyball as they secured a spot in the CCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over Chico State. The Seawolves racked up 69 kills, the most in a match since 2017 on their way to improving to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in CCAA play.
SSU honored their seven seniors in a ceremony before the game and all seven had an impact on the contest.
Ola Coker made her first career start and recorded two first set kills. The Seawolves led halfway through the set but a 7-1 Chico State run flipped the score before the Wildcats went on to a 25-21 win.
Sonoma State evened the match with a big second set, breaking a 9-9 tie with a 10-1 run to break it open. Senior
Jaden Krist recorded four of her six kills in the second during the run with fellow senior
Jen Trephan adding two more.
Emily Hernandez later added two straight kills and
Leilani Hallman notched set point with a kill of her own. The Seawolves finished the second with 20 kills, their highest total in a single set this season.
The third set was back-and-forth to start with the Wildcats leading 11-9 after the first 20 points. SSU fought back to even the score at 13-13 and then used a 7-2 run to jump out to a 20-15 lead. After two straight point by Chico State the Seawolves closed the door with five consecutive kills to end the set.
Kiana Richardson recorded two of the final five points with Trephan, Hallman and
Brooklyn Jackson adding one each.
Sonoma State closed out the match in the fourth, overcoming an early 4-1 deficit to take their first lead at 10-9. From that point on the Seawolves never trailed again, finishing off Chico State with with 17 kills in the set.
SSU had one their best hitting performances of the season with 69 kills and a .338 hitting percentage. The 69 kills were the most since 2017 and the .338 % was their second best of the season. Krist led four Seawolves in double figures with 16 kills while Richardson added 13. Jackson finished with 12 and Trephan recorded her 7
th triple-double of the year with 11 kills, 25 assists and 17 digs.
The win moved the Seawolves in a three-way tie for 3
rd place in the CCAA. They will close out their regular season next week with a pair of road matches, first at San Francisco State on Thursday and then at first-place Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
