TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team recorded a big CCAA victory on Saturday afternoon, running past Stanislaus State 66-48. The Seawolves used a 19-1 first quarter run to break the game open and improve to 9-7 in conference play and 12-10 overall.
After the teams traded baskets to open the contest, Sonoma state ripped off a 19-1 run to close the first quarter. Six different Seawolves scored during the run with
Taylor Johnson leading the way with six.
Alli McDonald added two baskets with
Amanda Luckett closing the quarter with a basket plus the free-throw to make it 23-5 after the first. SSU hit all nine of their free-throws during the first while forcing the Warriors into nine straight misses from the field.
Stanislaus State worked their way back into the game in the second, cutting the deficit to eight before a big 3-pointer by
Taylor Johnson ended the run and pushed it back to 11.
Cielo Gonzalez later hit a triple of her own as the game went to the break at 31-22.
The Seawolves quickly pushed the margin back to double figures in the third quarter, scoring the first six points and opening with a 13-2 run. Luckett scored four of the first six points and added the final basket of the run to make a 20-point advantage. Luckett would score her eighth point of the third two minutes later and McDonald tacked on another basket as the lead stood at twelve headed to the fourth.
Taylor Johnson caught fire in the fourth for SSU, draining a 3-pointer and following with a jumper and another triple to score the team's first eight points. The Seawolves closed out the game with an 18-point fourth quarter on 5 of 7 shooting and 3 of 4 from long range.
Sonoma State shot 42% from the field while limiting the Warriors to just 31%. Luckett posted a huge double-double with 13 points and a career high 15 rebounds. She grabbed six offensive rebounds on the game to help SSU to 15 second chance points.
Taylor Johnson led the team in scoring with 17 points, eight of which game in the fourth. McDonald chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.
The Seawolves return home next week to host CCAA leader Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
