SEASIDE, CALIF. - On Sunday, March 19th, the Sonoma State baseball team would be handed their 5th straight loss in a four-game sweep against Cal State Monterey Bay. After pushing the game back due to morning rainfall, the Seawolves would hang tough in the early innings but give up another big inning in the 6th to give the Otters a decisive 7-run lead.
Sophomore right hander
Blake Janowicz would go 5 strong innings for SSU, leaving the game with SSU down just a run.
Christopher Wright and
Kenny Decelle continue their hot starts to the season with a pair of hits each to lead the way.
1ST INNING:
The Seawolves would jump out to a 1-0 lead good for just their second lead of the series as sophomore outfielder
Sean Pauly would single to left field to lead off the game. Pauly would use his legs and take advantage of an Otter error to score the game's first run two batters later.
Monterey Bay would answer quickly though with a 3-run inning in the bottom half that included 4 hits and a Seawolf error. After giving up 3 runs in the first, Janowicz would settle down and retire 12 of the next 15 batters he faced to give up just 1 run over the next four innings. He would depart at the start of the 6th inning for
Scotty Kato.
5TH AND 6TH INNING:
In the 5th, the Seawolves would get some more help from the long ball as they would record their 5th homer of the series off the bat of junior outfielder
Kenny Decelle to make it just a 1-run game. The lined shot to left field would go down as Decelle's second of the season as he leads the team with a .333 average and 13 RBI's.
However, the Otters would get to the Seawolves reliever and explode for a 6-run 6th inning, representing a common trend in this conference series. A pair of 3-run homers from Monterey Bay would do the damage as they extended their lead to 10-3.
FINAL SSU 3-12 CSUMB:
Sophomore right hander
Chase Banks would replace Kato in the 7th and make his 4th appearance of the season. He would give up a run in the 7th and the 8th as the Otters ensured the 12-3 victory and the series sweep. Veteran first baseman
Christopher Wright and outfielder
Kenny Decelle combined for 4 hits in the game, while first year catcher
Chris Ortiz added an RBI single in the 4th to finish the weekend with a hit in all three games he appeared in.
