TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball saw their season come to an end on Thursday evening with a 75-63 loss to Cal State LA in the CCAA Tournament. The game, held in Turlock saw the Seawolves nearly erase a 22-point second half comeback, pulling within one in the fourth. SSU closed out the season with a 16-13 overall record and their sixth straight appearance in the postseason.
The game started with the team's trading baskets and featured five ties and two lead changes in the fist six minutes.
Jayme Blackard got off to a quick start, scoring seven of the first nine Seawolf points and
Camille Johnson tied the score at 11 with a layup of her own. LA closed the first on a 10-3 run with Blackard hitting her second 3-pointer for the Seawolves as they would trail 21-14 after one.
The Eagles took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Sonoma State 22-9 and leading by 20 at the break.
Amanda Luckett scored a pair of buckets and
Cielo Gonzalez added a triple for SSU in the second.
After the margin to moved to as many as 22 in the third the Seawolves made their move. They used a 7-0 run to trim a 19-point deficit to 12.
Camille Johnson recorded a basket plus the foul before
Kianna Maldia hit a jumper and Johnson notched another basket. The Eagles stopped the streak with a free-throw before Maldia hit another jumper and Gonzalez sank another triple to get the margin down to single digits. Lilly Buggs hit a 3-pointer for the Eagles on the next possession but the Seawolves were far from done. Gonzalez converted a pair of freebies and then drilled another three while Maldia closed the quarter with two free-throws of her own. The quick 7-0 run to end the third got the lead down to four with ten minutes remaining.
Luckett and
Taylor Johnson both scored in the opening minutes of the fourth and suddenly the Seawolves trailed by one with just under eight minutes remaining. Sonoma State forced a turnover on the next possession and had two chances to take the lead but came up empty handed on the offensive run. The next four minutes were all Cal State LA as the No. 3 seed ripped off a 16-1 run to put the game away.
The Seawolves finished with four players in double figures with Blackard leading the way with 15. Luckett added a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds. Gonzalez netted 12 points of her own and
Camille Johnson tacked on 11. Maldia also finished with a career high nine points.
