ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The No. 13 ranked Sonoma State softball team scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth in both games to earn a sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt 2-1 and 4-2 on the first day of the series. The Seawolves improved to 20-4 on the season and 14-3 in CCAA play with the wins.
Sonoma State jumped out early in the first game, recording a run in the first inning to give starter
Bailee Reed a lead.
Anna Zoia-Buescher opened the frame with a single and promptly stole second. She then came in to score on a single through the right side by
Jordyn Martinez for a 1-0 advantage.
Reed cruised through the first two innings before the Lumberjacks tied the game in the third with an unearned run. The game moved into the sixth still tied at 1-1 with reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week
Charlie Johnson coming on in relief to close out the top of the frame. In the bottom of the sixth the Seawolves got back on top with a clutch hit from
Skylar Linnane. Martinez reached base on a hit-by-pitch before
Giana Hays grounded into a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score on Linnane's two out single to right.
Johnson did the rest, picking up her third win of the season with a scoreless seventh. Johnson made all three plays from the circle, fielding two groundballs and ending the contest by snagging a line drive.
Zoia-Buescher led the way with two hits and a steal while Martinez and Linnane picked up RBIs. In the circle, Reed went 5.2 innings and allowed just the one unearned run.
The nightcap started with Cal Poly Humboldt taking an early lead, plating two runs in the first off
Nichole Sarra. The Seawolves got one back in the bottom of the inning after an error in the outfield allowed
Rylee Nishimoto to score. Sarra settled in from there, shutting out the Jacks for the next four innings. Johnson took over in the sixth got out of the inning unscathed to keep the score at 2-1.
The Sonoma State offense took over from there. Nishimoto opened the inning with a triple off the right field wall to put the tying run 60-feet away. Martinez then stepped in a blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to put the Seawolves on top for the first time in the game. Later in the inning Linnane singled and stole second and third before scoring on a single by
Cassidy Romano.
Once again, Johnson closed out the game in the seventh with a scoreless frame. Johnson struck out the first two batters of the inning and then got the final out on another strikeout to improve to 4-0 on the season. Her two scoreless innings extended her streak to 28 straight innings without allowing an earned run. The Seawolves defense also came up big in the contest, turning three double plays to end innings.
