SB: Seawolves Split Series with Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team faced a tough CCAA test this weekend, traveling to Cal State San Bernardino and splitting a four-game series with the Coyotes.  The Seawolves won the nightcap on both Friday and Saturday after dropping the first game each day.

The series opened with the Coyotes winning the first game 6-5, followed by a 12-2 response from Sonoma State.  On Saturday the teams traded shutouts with CSUSB taking the first game 7-0 and the Seawolves winning the finale 3-0.

The Coyotes got off to a fast start on Friday, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second.  Sonoma State began chipping away in the top of the third, scoring two runs and then added another in the fourth on a steal by Anna Zoia-Buescher that allowed Maddy Martinez to score.  The Seawolves pulled within one in the sixth on back-to-back homeruns by Reagan Hunt and Courtney Jack to make the score 6-5.  In the top of the seventh they would put the tying run on base with a single by Jordyn Martinez but the Coyotes got the final out to seal the win.

Sonoma State's offense exploded in the second game, scoring three runs in the second and seven more in the third to break the game open early.  Lauren Mirtoni drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run, followed by an RBI by Skylar Linnane and a single by Zoia-Buescher.  With the score 3-0 heading into the third the Seawolf bats were back at it.  Jack singled in a run before Mirtoni and Cassidy Romano also plated one on hits of their own.  Zoia-Buescher then delivered the knockout punch with a grand slam to right center to make it 10-0.  The Coyotes score two in the bottom of the fourth but Jordyn Martinez got the lead back to ten with a two-run blast in the top of the fifth.

The Seawolves finished with 13 hits in the game, including three apiece from Martinez and Jack.  Zoia-Buescher, Giana Hays and Mirtoni added two each with Zoia-Buescher leading all players with four RBIs.  Nichole Sarra picked up her sixth win of the season with three scoreless innings in the circle.

Saturday played out in a similar fashion with CSUSB jumping out to a big lead.  The Coyotes scored in each of the first five innings, including three in the bottom of the third to break the game open.  Offensively, Sonoma State finished with only three hits.

The series finale was all Seawolves as Bailee Reed shutdown the Coyotes with a three-hit shutout.  Reed improved to 9-1 on the season and struck out five in seven innings of work.  Jack recorded the big hit in the game, a two-run homerun in the second inning to put Sonoma State ahead for good.  The final run of the game was scored on a bases loaded walk by Rylee Nishimoto

The Seawolves moved to 9-2 in CCAA play with the split and are 15-3 overall.  They will return home to take on Cal State San Marcos in a battle of the first and second place teams in the conference.  The series will open on Friday at noon with all games being streamed on the CCAA Network.
