SB: Johnson and Hays Lift Seawolves to 3-0 Win in Tournament of Champions Finale

TURLOCK, Calif. – Charlie Johnson dominated in the circle and Giana Hays delivered a two-run homerun as the Sonoma State softball closed out the Tournament of Champions with a 3-0 win over Hawaii Pacific.  The No. 13 ranked Seawolves moved to 25-6 on the season with a 3-2 record this weekend.

Johnson toed the rubber for her third start in as many days and controlled the game from the start.  She retired the first three batters in order and did allow a runner past second base in the contest.  Johnson extended her consecutive innings without an earned run streak to 55.2 innings and lowered her ERA on the season to 0.23.  The complete game shutout was also her second in a row after shutting down Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.

Offensively the Seawolves were racking up hits but not coming away with any runs.  Anna Zoia-Buescher and Rylee Nishimoto opened the game with back-to-back singles and Lauren Mirtoni later added on of her own but the bases were left loaded without a run.  SSU picked up two more hits in the second and one each in the third and fourth but the game still moved to the fifth in a scoreless tie.  That all changed in the bottom of the fifth with Hays driving a long ball over the fence to score Nishimoto who reached earlier on a single.

Sonoma State added another in the bottom of the sixth with a double by Skylar Linnane and a triple by Anna Zoia-Buescher.  Zoia-Buescher led all players with three hits with Nishimoto, Linnane and Mirtoni adding two apiece.

Johnson's performance on the weekend of 23.2 innings and a 0.00 ERA earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  The Seawolves will host Montana State Billings for a pair of non-conference games at home on Tuesday before heading to Cal State East Bay this weekend for two doubleheaders.
