SB: Seawolves Split with Cal State Dominguez Hills in First Twinbill

CARSON, Calif. – The No. 10 ranked Sonoma State softball team earned a split with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon with a 12-1 win in the nightcap.  The Seawolves fell 3-2 in 9 innings in the opener before rebounding with a 13-hit performance.  SSU moved to 33-9 overall and 23-6 in CCAA play.

The Seawolves found themselves down early in the first game, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the second after an error extended the inning.  The lead lasted until the fourth when Sonoma State battled back to tie the game.  Rylee Nishimoto led things off with a single and moved to third on a single by Giana HaysCassidy Romano then sent a blast to left that bounced off the top rail of the fencer and back into play for a triple.  Both runners came in to score and tie the game.

Charlie Johnson came on in relief of Bailee Reed in the second inning and shut down the Toros for six straight innings.  The game moved into extra innings with neither team able to push a run across and coming up empty in the eighth as well.  In the ninth CSUDH ended the game with a walk-off homerun from the leadoff batter to earn the win.

Johnson finished with 6.1 innings of work, allowed just three hits and the one run.  Hays led all players in the game with three hits with Romano driving in both runs.

The Seawolves offense exploded in the second game, scoring runs in four of the first five innings to break the game open.  Anna Zoia-Buescher led off the game with a triple off the wall and came into score on a perfect squeeze bunt by Hays.  SSU added two more in the third with Zoia-Buescher and Hays contributing again.  Zoia-Buescher singled and Hays doubled on a shot to center to put two runners in scoring position.  Romano once again delivered a big hit with a two-out line drive up the middle to score both and make it 3-0.

Nichole Sarra meanwhile was in control on the rubber, holding the Toros hitless through three innings.  She picked up a big strikeout to end a threat in the third and keep it a three-run game.  Skylar Linnane added two more runs to the total in the fourth with a opposite field homerun, her fourth of the season.

CSUDH got one run back in the bottom of the fourth but the Seawolves erased all doubt in the fifth with seven runs.  Hays drew a leadoff walk before Romano and Lauren Mirtoni both singled to load the bases.  Jordyn Martinez then was hit by a pitch to score a run and two batters later Courtney Jack singled to make it 7-1.  Sierra Moffett delivered a pinch hit two-run single and Zoia-Buescher followed with a two-run single of her own to push the score to 11-1.  Hays ended the rally with another hit, scoring Zoia-Buescher.  Johnson came on for a scoreless inning of relief to finish off the run-ruled game.

Martinez set a big school record in the game, picking up her 148th career RBI to break the program mark set by Ali Palermo.  Zoia-Buescher finished the contest 4 for 4 while Hays, Romano and Linnane added two hits apiece.

The Seawolves and Toros will close out their regular season schedule tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.  Both games will be streamed on the CCAA Network and live stats can be found at www.sonomaseawolves.com.
