BSB: Hernandez Walks it Off in the 9th as Seawolves Grab Back-to-Back Wins

SANTA ROSA, CALIF. - On Friday, April 7th, the Sonoma State baseball team danced around some early showers in Sonoma County as the originally scheduled doubleheader had to be adjusted to a single game over at Santa Rosa JC. Despite the weather playing a factor, the Seawolves would get a tremendous pitching performance from junior right hander Nik Kamages as he went for a career high 7 scoreless innings. Veteran right hander Ross Goldschlag would follow things up with two shutout innings of his own before SSU ended things with a walk-off single in the 9th from Mark Hernandez, giving the Seawolves back-to-back wins for the first time since February 18th.

PITCHING:

Casa Grande product Nik Kamages would make his team leading 9th appearance and 4th start of the season after throwing an inning in Tuesday's make up game against Cal State East Bay. Kamages has shown great potential throughout the year and has seemed to get better as the season continues. Despite a tough outing against 5th ranked San Bernardino last weekend, Kamages bounced back with a career outing today against the Toros.

Kamages would finish with a career high 7 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters, good for his second most K's in an outing this season. Despite exiting the game not in line for the win, he would ease the stress on the SSU bullpen and allow fellow right hander Ross Goldschlag to enter in the 8th.

The Dominguez Hills starter would follow Kamages's lead as he went for 8 scoreless innings of his own on an efficient 92 pitches. The game would speed its way to the 9th as both teams combined for just six hits entering the 9th inning. The Toros starter would finally show some fatigue as he walked the leadoff batter in the 9th, his third walk in two innings, forcing him out of the game with the game winning run on first.

9TH INNING:

After a leadoff walk to pinch hitter Shane Callison, the table was set with the top of the order coming to the plate. Sophomore outfielder Sean Pauly would spike a bunt right in front of the Toros catcher, but a high bounce and a good jump from Callison would force them to take the out at first as Pauly would get the job done and advance Callison to second.

Dominguez Hills brought in a lefty after the leadoff walk and after the sacrifice bunt, left handed hitter Jared Esparza would battle against the Toros pitcher, eventually fighting off a slow roller to the shortstop. Esparza would dive head first into first base and be called out on a bang-bang play, but Callison would make his way to third with two down.

To the plate would come Oxnard native Mark Hernandez who would foul off a couple tough pitches and battle to a 2-2 count. Hernandez would shoot a ball into the 5-6 hole and narrowly sneak it by the diving third baseman as Callison trotted home and Hernandez would get stormed by his teammates in shallow right field. Hernandez has been a nice addition to the Seawolves lineup in recent weeks, recording a hit in five straight games and raising his average to .293 on the season.

Ross Goldschlag would get credit for his team leading fourth win of the season for his two scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th as the Seawolves picked up a huge win in conference action. Sean Pauly, Elijah Munoz, Lucas Townsend, Joey Loveless and Mark Hernandez would record the team's 5 hits in the contest.
