WSOC: Seawolves Battle Western Washington to Scoreless Draw

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In what has become an annual tradition of NCAA Division II West Region heavyweights, the Sonoma State women's soccer team took on Western Washington on Monday evening.  The Seawolves battled the defending National Champions to a 0-0 draw to record their third straight shutout this season.

SSU moved to 2-1-2 overall on the year and have recorded clean sheets in four of their five contests.  This game was a defensive battle from the start with just six total shots in the first half, three from each side.  Annette Sotelo notched the first shot for the Seawolves and Luna Chavez took a chance from distance as both attempts were on target but stopped by the goalie.  Chavez also recorded the final shot of the half that sailed out wide.

Defensively, centerbacks Julia Betti and Ashley Frye were all over the field for Sonoma State, thwarting a breakaway chance and clearing any danger throughout the half.

The second half featured more action from the Vikings offense but the SSU defense and goalkeeper Claudia Janese proved to be up to the task.  Janese made two stops in goal for the Seawolves and the defense cleared enough WWU chances to earn the 90-minute shutout.

Janese extended her scoreless streak to 295 minutes with her fourth shutout of the season and lowered her goals-against-average to 0.44.

This is the second time in history these two teams have played to a scoreless tie with the last one coming in 2016.  The Seawolves won last year's matchup 2-1 at home ending a four-game winning streak by the Vikings.

Sonoma State is back in action on Saturday when they head up to Arcata to take on Cal Poly Humboldt in the final non-conference match of the season.  The live stream will be available on the CCAA Network and live stats through the link on www.sonomaseawolves.com
