ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- It was a hot day on Seawolf Soccer Field with temperatures reaching close to 90 degrees. It was only fitting that the on field product was also a hotly contested match. For 90 minutes the Seawolves and visiting Cougars of San Marcos battled and eventually ended in a draw.
The Seawolves fought through the heat and solid Cougars defense to seven quality shots. Five of said shots would be on goal. Jvon Cunningham was particularly aggressive with three shots on goal. The veterans presence on the attack was huge in keeping the opposition on their heels. Alongside Cunningham, Jose Rios Lara was the teams lone scorer of the match. After freshman Alejandro Verdugo earned a penalty after being fouled in the box, Rios Lara calmly found the back of the net after facing down the Cougars goalie. Rios Lara is now up to a team leading four goals on the season.
Unfortunately, after being forced to play down a body late the Cougars were able to capitalize and score a goal with roughly five minutes left on the clock. Still, starting goalkeeper Jack Chapman gave an outstanding effort while in the net. Chapman had multiple impressive saves including diving to his left and batting away a shot late in the first half. Chapman is now up to 24 saves on the season including a shutout as CCAA play has officially gotten underway.
Sonoma State is back in action at Seawolf Soccer Field on Sunday when they host Cal State East Bay at 2:00 pm.
