SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Friday afternoon, dropping a CCAA match to Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 on a goal in the final minute of play. The Seawolves controlled for most of the game, holding a 14-9 shot advantage but could not find the back of the net.
The first half saw both teams locked in a scoreless draw, with Sonoma State's goalkeeper
Ariana Beddoes making two crucial saves to keep the Seawolves in the game. SSU managed four shots in the first half before the intensity picked up in the second.
Sonoma State came out strong after halftime, dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. The Seawolves outshot their opponents 10-6 in the second half, with
Julia Betti and
Mia Solorio-Smith each testing Cal State San Bernardino's goalkeeper Leila Peregrina. The Seawolves best chance came in the 86
th minute when
Hailey Freeman deflected a shot from
Kayleigh Acree in front of the net. Peregrina made a diving save to block the ball before the defense cleared it.
Just as it seemed the game was destined for a draw, Bella Cervantes broke the deadlock in the 90
th minute to give the Coyotes the win. Sonoma State controlled much of the game statistically. The Seawolves outshot their opponents 14-9 and earned eight corner kicks to San Bernardino's two. SSU racked up 10 shots in the second half alone and out eight on target for the contest.
The Seawolves will look to rebound on Sunday when they take on No. 4 ranked Cal Poly Pomona at 2:00 pm.
