Men’s Basketball Opens CCAA Play with 74-62 Win Over San Marcos Cougars

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- The start of CCAA play was a success for coach Rich Shayewitz's squad as they secured a post-Thanksgiving victory against Cal State San Marcos inside the Wolves Den. It was a balanced team effort with four players in double figures, four players swiped multiple steals and four players had three or more assists. Despite a close first half score, the Seawolves managed to blow the game open in the second half with a 15-3 run with just under 17 minutes left in the game.

Right away the Seawolves defense caused chaos all game long which led to 21 Cougar turnovers and 11 Seawolf steals. They also did a great job limiting San Marcos's attempts from behind the arc as the Cougars only shot 21% from deep. Lastly, Sonoma's offense was firing on all cylinders with outstanding ball movement. Of their 21 made field goals, 16 of them came via an assist.

From a scoring standpoint, the Seawolves starting backcourt once again led the way with James Nobles and Nick Medieros each scoring 15 points a piece. Nobles put together a balanced scoring effort as he piled up points from all three levels on the court. He drilled three three pointers, knocked down a pair of free throws and got to the rim as he always does. Medieros was once again highly efficient with a 67% shooting display from the floor. He was also outstanding in sealing the game with multiple clutch free throws en route to a perfect 6-6 showing from the charity stripe. He also had a game high five assists to only one turnover.

The unsung hero of the day for the Seawolves was Julian Bryant. Bryant has really found his rhythm over the past few games and stuffed the statsheet in 35 minutes of action. He scored 10 points but was dominant as a rebounder. He had a game high 9 rebounds and dished out three assists. Bryant was everywhere for the Seawolves as he rarely came off the court and provided a steady presence for the team all game long.

Lastly, graduate transfer Jack Schultz deserves mention for making multiple winning plays that won't show up on the boxscore against his old team. His five points don't jump off the page but he had three steals, handed out three assists and was a force on the defensive end and glass given his extra effort all game long.

The Seawolves have gotten back to their winning ways and will now turn their attention to next Thursday, December 5th when the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino make the trip to the Wolves Den!
