ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Sonoma State Women's Basketball moved to 2-1 in CCAA play after a defensive battle against the visiting Broncos of Cal Poly. The Seawolves have found their identity as a gritty team that defends at all three levels on the court and makes opponents work for every field goal.
Earlier this week the Seawolves held the Coyotes of San Marcos to just 33% from the floor and 18% from three. They cranked up the defensive pressure against the Broncos as they only allowed them to shoot 27% from the floor including six blocks. They also forced 14 turnovers which led to extra points and possessions.
Leading the way offensively for Sonoma was dynamic guard Alysa Lopez. Lopez has now eclipsed double figures in scoring on six different occasions thanks to 16 points against the Broncos. Lopez's ability to break down defenders off the dribble and finish with either hands is impressive. Teams have had no answer at stopping her crossovers, floaters and layup packages once she gets into the paint. For good measure she pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists as well.
Abbey Hadsell also gave her team a great boost as a member of the second unit. In her 18 minutes of action Hadsell was a highly efficient four of five from the floor. More importantly, she did a great job defending the paint with three blocks. Alongside Hadsell, starting center Paige Pentzer was also active in the post all game long. Her six rebounds were highlighted by a team high four offensive boards.
Freshman Genesis Hopkins also did some great things in her career high 15 minutes of playing time. She did a great job on defense using her length to both defend on the perimeter and contest shots at the rim. She came away with two big blocks that kept the Broncos from adding points in the tightly contested game.
It was a solid week of hoops for the Seawolves who moved to 2-1 in CCAA play. They did a great job defensively and will look to continue building the offensive efficiency. Next on the schedule is an exhibition against the Gaels of Saint Mary's on the 14th.
