SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team kept it rolling on Saturday, sweeping Cal State San Marcos, the 4
th ranked team in the nation 1-0 and 7-4. The Seawolves took three of four on the weekend and sit in second place in the CCAA at 3-1.
Bailee Reed hurled a complete game, 2-hit shutout in the first game of the day to pick up her second win of the season. She struck out three including two in a row in bases loaded situation in the second inning. Offensively, SSU manufactured the game's lone run in the top of 3
rd as
Melissa Felix came in to score on a squeeze bunt by
Giana Hays. From there Reed did the rest, holding the Cougars hitless over the final four innings to put the game away.
The Seawolves jumped out early in the series finale and never surrendered the lead.
Jasmine Moreno led off the top of the 2
nd with a walk and
Taylor Rapp reached on a fielder's choice.
Skylar Linnane then delivered the big hit, a 3-run shot to right centerfield for her third homerun of the series. SSU was back at it in the 3
rd inning, putting two more runs across.
Rylee Nishimoto led off with a single and advanced to third on a hit by Hays. Hays then stole second and both runners came in to score on a single by Rapp.
Nichole Sarra worked her way through three scoreless innings before being relieved by
Charlie Johnson with 1-out in the 4
th. The Cougars managed one run but Johnson got the final two outs to end the rally and keep the score 5-1.
The game stayed there until the 7
th when the Seawolves tacked two more runs onto their advantage. Hays singled and stole second, eventually scoring on a double steal with Moreno to make it 6-1. Rapp then delivered another single to plate Moreno.
Cal State San Marcos was able to put three on the board in the bottom of the 7
th but Johnson got the game ended groundout with two runners on to seal the victory. She improved to 4-2 on the season with the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings.
Rapp and Linnane drove in three runs apiece for the Seawolves while Hays added two hits and three steals.
