HAYWARD, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team erased an early deficit to overtake Cal State East Bay 69-65 and punch their ticket to the 2024 CCAA Tournament. The Seawolves will be make their third straight appearance in the postseason as they improved to 11-10 in conference play and 16-12 overall.
SSU found themselves in a hole early, falling behind 14-2 in the first six minutes as they hit just one of their first seven shots.
Laura Smith ended the run with a basket and
Trena Rathjen added a 3-pointer and another bucket to send the game to the second at 19-9.
The Pioneers opened up a 15-point lead in the second quarter before a 7-0 run by the Seawolves brought the deficit back to single digits.
Jayme Blackard scored five of the seven points during the run with
Alli McDonald added a basket of her own. The Seawolves managed to get it down to six late in the half but ultimately went to the break trailing 33-25.
McDonald opened the third with a score and Rathjen followed with another triple as Sonoma State chipped away at the deficit.
Keara Colombo added a bucket and Rathjen buried another one from deep to make it a 1-point game. Rathjen sank another three moments later and McDonald even the game at 46-46 with a layup. McDonald then gave the Seawolves their first lead with a 3-pointer in the final minute of the third.
SSU took the 3-point advantage into the fourth and kept the lead the rest of the way. Blackard's three at the halfway point extended the lead to six. Blackard later hit a pair of free-throws with 27 seconds remaining to make it a 5-point game but the Pioneers answered with a three. After the teams traded free-throws to keep it a 2-point game, Blackard hit another pair from the line with 14 ticks remaining to seal the game.
The Seawolves shot 59% from the field after halftime and were 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Defensively SSU forced the Pioneers into 24 turnovers and turned that into 29 points. McDonald led Sonoma State with 20 points and 6 rebounds while adding 3 steals. Blackard 18 points and 4 assists with Rathjen finishing with 14 points and 4 made 3-pointers.
The win sealed a postseason berth for the Seawolves with one game remaining. SSU is currently the No. 6 seed but can move up to 5
th with a win on Thursday and a Cal State San Bernardino loss. Sonoma State will host CCAA Champions Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at 5:30 pm in the Wolves' Den. Live coverage will be available on the CCAA Network with live stats through the link at
