ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team used some clutch late hitting to earn a sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon. The Seawolves forced extra innings in the series opener before winning 4-3 and then took the nightcap 6-4 after a three-run 5
th inning. SSU moved to 7-5 in CCAA play and are now 10-9 overall on the season.
Sonoma State got on the board early in the first game, taking a 1-0 in the bottom of the 1
st.

Lauren Mirtoni all drew walks to load the bases before
Taylor Rapp plated the first run on a sacrifice fly.
Bailee Reed got the start in the circle for the Seawolves and cruised through the first two innings. The Otters scored a pair of unearned runs in the 3
rd after an error extended the inning. They would add another unearned run in the top of the 6
th to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Seawolves entered the 6
th hitless and managed to score a second run without recording a hit. Zoia-Buescher led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, she came into score on a sacrifice fly by
Giana Hays to cut the deficit to one run. Mirtoni broke up Mackenzie Willis's no-hitter in the bottom of the frame with a double off the wall but was stranded on second base.
The game moved to the bottom of the 7
th with the Seawolves needing a run to extend the game. Freshman
Jocelyn Robles delivered the big hit, leading off the inning and belting her first career home run. Robles took the 2-2 pitch over the leftfield wall to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to extra innings. Reed retired the Otters in order to open the 8
th, giving SSU a chance to walk-off in the bottom of the frame. The Seawolves took full advantage with Zoia-Buescher and Nishimoto opening with back-to-back singles. Hays then stepped up and drilled the game-winning single through the left side to score Zoia-Buescher for the walk-off.
Reed picked up her 4
th win of the season with a complete game, allowing just three unearned runs on four hits and striking out three. Zoia-Buescher reached base four times with three walks and a hit and scored three of the four Seawolves runs.
The nightcap started much the same with Sonoma State scoring a run in the bottom of the 1
st. Zoia-Buescher once again opened with a walk and stole second. This time she came around to score on a single up the middle by Nishimoto. The Otters also answered back in the same exact fashion as the opener, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3
rd off starter

SSU responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs of their own.
Jade Costa singled and Zoia-Buescher followed with a double off the top of the wall in right. Two batters later Hays plated a run on another sacrifice fly and another run came in on a throwing error by the outfielder. CSUMB even the game at 3-3 in the top of the 5
th on a single to left.
Sonoma State regained the advantage in the bottom of the 5
th when a two-out error allowed Zoia-Buescher to score the go-ahead run. Mirtoni followed with a RBI single and Rapp added a RBI double down the leftfield line to make it 6-3. The Otters loaded the bases in the top of the 6
th against Sarra and got a run across on a walk. Reed then came on in relief and got the key bases loaded out to end the inning and send the game to the 7
th. She did the rest from there, retiring three straight hitters in the top of the 7
th to earn her first save of the season.
Sarra earned the victory with 5.2 innings of work while Nishimoto recorded a pair of hits and a RBI. Zoia-Buescher scored three more runs and added her second steal of the day.
