Kamages Throws 5+ in Relief to Earn Series Finale Win for SSU, 5-3 over CPP

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Sunday, March 17th, the Sonoma State baseball team salvaged another series finale victory as they came from behind to beat Cal Poly Pomona 5-3. Freshman right hander Luke Ivanoff earned himself another start after picking up his second win of the season last week over the Pioneers and grinded through three innings giving up two runs. The Seawolves would come from behind with five runs in the 6th inning to take their first lead of the series and senior right hander Nik Kamages would slam the door shut with 5+ innings in relief and 6 strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

The Seawolves pitching got off to better start in the series finale on Sunday with Ivanoff getting them through the first three innings. Despite giving up four walks, he got outs when he needed them most, limiting the damage to just two runs and allowing 6 hits through 8 innings. Petaluma native Nik Kamages would come in relief in the 4th inning with a runner on and strikeout back-to-back batters to end the threat.

The Seawolves would find themselves down 3-0 in the 6th but were able to put up a five spot in the bottom half of the inning on just two hits. SSU took advantage of some rare mistakes from the Broncos pitching staff which included five walks and a wild pitch. Center fielder Kenny Decelle would tack on the 5th run in the inning with a sac fly to right field to score Chris Ortiz from third.

A big defensive moment for SSU would occur in the 8th inning after Kamages walked the leadoff batter. The Broncos had been very active all series long with small ball and bunting runners over forcing the Seawolves to make plays defensively. The ensuing Broncos batter would attempt to sacrifice but pop the bunt into the air and Kamages would snare the pop up and fire it to first to double off the runner and clear the bases with two outs. Kamages would go on to strikeout one of Pomona's top hitters in the series in the next at bat to end the inning and walk back into the dugout fired up with his teammates and coaches.

He would work around more trouble in the 9th with a walk and a 2-out single but get the next batter to fly out to right field to seal the 5-3 victory. The outing would go down as Kamages's best of the season allowing just 1 run and striking out 6 Broncos on the afternoon.
