Offense Lifts Seawolves Over Cal Poly Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team had their bats working on Saturday afternoon, racking up nine runs in a 9-5 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt.  The nightcap was halted in the bottom of the 3rd with SSU leading 2-0 and will be made-up at a later date.  The win in the opener moved the Seawolves to 19-12 overall and 12-7 in CCAA play.

The game started out as a pitchers' duel with Nichole Sarra getting the start for Sonoma State.  Sarra cruised through the first three inning, allowing just two hits before being relieved by Reed to start the 4th.  As the game moved to the 5th still at 0-0, the Seawolves offense got going off Jacks starter Gage Garcia.

Carissa Marquez started the rally with a single and Amari Houston followed with a bunt single of her own.  Two batters later, Rylee Nishimoto drew a walk to load the bases for Giana Hays with two outs.  Hays jumped on the first pitch and drove it off the right centerfield wall for a bases clearing triple to make it 3-0.

The Seawolves we back at it in the top of the 6th, plating five more runs to take an 8-0 advantage.  Jasmine Moreno opened with a walk and Kaiya Dickens then reached on an error.  After Danyelle Castillo was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Marquez came through again with a single down the left field line to score two more runs.  Nishimoto later scored another on a RBI single before the final two runs of the inning scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Cal Poly Humboldt got three back in the bottom of the 6th off Reed but Marquez followed with another RBI single in the top of the 7th to make it a 9-3 game.  Sarra returned for the final frame and allowed a pair of runs, but ultimately pitched out of a bases loaded jam to end the game at 9-5.

Reed earned her 11th victory of the season to improve to 11-4 with three innings of work.  Marquez set a career high with three hits and three RBIs while Hays added a pair of hits and three RBIs.

The two teams will finalize their series in the coming weeks, picking up the halted final game in the bottom of the 3rd with SSU leading 2-0.  Lauren Mirtoni singled in Anna Zoia-Buescher in the top of the 1st and Hays added a solo shot in the 3rd

The Seawolves return home this week for six CCAA games in three days.  SSU will host Cal State East Bay on Tuesday for the final two games of their postponed series.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.  On Friday and Saturday the Seawolves will take on Cal State San Bernardino for a pair of doubleheaders.
